Store Credit After A Return

A credit note issued after a return sits differently in most people's minds to a card bought as a present, and the two get treated as interchangeable. If you're holding a credit note, ask the retailer to put the reason it was issued and any expiry date in writing, so there is no argument about it later.

A credit given because a garment was faulty is a different matter again, because the underlying consumer guarantees still apply.
