As a fashion designer in Australia, I’ve spent my career chasing the "Holy Grail" of textiles; a fabric that breathes like a summer breeze but insulates like a winter hearth. In the Australian landscape, where you can experience four seasons in a single Melbourne afternoon or a sharp temperature drop in the Perth hills, versatility isn't just a luxury; it’s a survival requirement for the modern wardrobe.
TIRELLI is thrilled to introduce our latest knitwear collection, which marks a turning point in sustainable luxury. We have moved away from traditional 100% compositions to create a 70/30 Hybrid Blend: 70% GOTS-Certified Organic Cotton and 30% Extra-Fine Australian Merino Wool.
These are not just tops; they are a piece of biological engineering. By marrying the structural integrity and hypoallergenic nature of organic cotton with the thermal-regulating "superpowers" of Merino, we’ve created a garment that defines 2026 knitwear trends: Architectural Comfort.
The fashion world has officially moved away from "chunky" knits that make you look like a marshmallow and feel like you’re trapped in a sauna once you step indoors.
The "Liquid" Drape: 2026 is all about fine-gauge knits. Because our 70/30 blend is so efficient at heat retention, we can keep the profile slim. The trend is for a "liquid" fall, garments that skim the body rather than clinging to it.
The Palette: We are seeing a return to "Biophilic Hues." Think Khaki greens, scorched earth Amberstone, and Wine reds. These colours connect us back to the natural origins of the cotton and wool fibres.
Textured Minimalism: The trend isn't in flashy logos, but in the weave. Our collection utilises Micro-Ribbing and Pointelle detailing, adding visual depth without the bulk.
Layering in 2026 is about "The Rule of Three." Our hybrid tops are designed specifically to function as the Foundation Layer.
The Base: The high cotton content in our 70/30 blend makes it incredibly soft against the skin, eliminating the "itch factor" some associate with pure wool.
The Mid: Pair our long-sleeve crew necks under a structured French Linen shirt for a high-low texture contrast that is very "in" this season.
The Outer: On a crisp Canberra morning, layer a heavy Puffer Coat over our knit. The Merino component will trap your body heat, while the cotton ensures you don't overheat the moment you step into a heated office or café.
How does a blend keep you warmer than pure cotton? It’s all in the Merino Crimp.
Even at 30%, the Merino wool fibres create millions of microscopic air pockets that trap body heat. However, the 70% organic cotton acts as a "ventilation shaft," allowing excess moisture to escape. This prevents the "clammy" feeling often found in synthetic thermals. It is the ultimate solution for the Australian winter, providing warmth without weight.
We’ve designed this collection with "Mobile Seams." In 2026, we recognise that the professional woman is active. Whether you are commuting, lifting a toddler, or reaching for a file, our knitwear moves with you.
No "Bagging Out": Pure cotton can lose its shape. The addition of Merino wool provides a "natural memory," allowing the fibres to snap back to their original form after a day of wear.
Hypoallergenic: For those with sensitive skin who usually find wool irritating, the 70% organic cotton creates a soft barrier, making this the most wearable "wool-touch" garment on the market.
Because this is a natural, luxury product, it requires a "slow fashion" approach to maintenance.
Less is More: Merino is naturally odour-resistant. You only need to wash these tops every 5–7 wears.
Cold & Gentle: Use a wool-safe, pH-neutral detergent. Wash on a cold, gentle cycle inside a mesh laundry bag to prevent the natural fibres from being agitated against the machine drum.
Never Tumble Dry: Heat is the enemy. It will shrink the wool and snap the cotton fibres.
Flat Dry: Reshape the garment while damp and lay it flat on a clean towel in the shade.
Fold, Don't Hang: Gravity will stretch a knit. Always fold your hybrid tops to maintain the integrity of the shoulder seams.
Natural Protection: Store with Cedar blocks or dried Lavender sachets. Moths are attracted to skin oils, so ensure the garment is clean before storing it for the summer.

Q1: Will this top "pill"?
All natural fibres experience some pilling as loose fibres migrate to the surface. However, the long-staple organic cotton we use binds the Merino fibres, significantly reducing pilling compared to 100% wool. A quick pass with a fabric comb once a month will keep it looking brand new.
Q2: Is the cotton "Australian-grown"?
While we use Australian Merino, our organic cotton is sourced from GOTS-certified global partners who meet the highest environmental and social standards, as organic cotton production is currently limited in the Australian climate.
Q3: Can I wear this in summer?
Yes! Because of the high cotton content and the moisture-wicking properties of Merino, these are excellent "evening-chill" tops for an Australian summer night.
Q4: Does it shrink?
If you follow the cold-wash, flat-dry instructions, shrinkage is minimal (less than 2%). If you put it in a hot dryer, it will shrink significantly, treat it like the luxury item it is!
Q5: Why 30% wool? Why not 50/50?
We found 30% to be the "sweet spot" for the Australian climate. It provides enough warmth for a 5°C morning but remains light enough to be worn comfortably in a 22°C office. It also ensures the garment remains incredibly soft for those with wool sensitivities.
